A long-overdue look at
the early genius of Pierre Barouh -- material recorded for the AZ
label in the years before he started the famous Saravah Records
company! The work here is somewhat more conventional than some of
Barouh's later work -- but in a way that's totally great, and
definitely fits the generation of Brel, Brassens, and Gainsbourg!
As always, Barouh's lyrics are fresh and creative -- and the
instrumentation includes a nice mix of jazz, Latin, mod, and other
hip 60s styles -- provided by arrangers Maurice Vander, Francois
Rauber, and Jacques Denjean. The 2CD component of the package
features 32 tracks in all -- 16 of which are from 7" Eps issued by
Pierre, plus 4 more tracks from the soundtrack to Un Homme Et Une
Femme, and 12 more from the rare album Vivre. Titles include "Nous", "Chanson Pour Teddy", "Le
Verbe Aimer", "Le Roman", "On N'A Rien A Faire", "Samba Saravah",
"Plus Fort Que Nous", "Vivre", "Un Jour D'Hiver", "Roses", "Les
Filles Du Dimanche", "De L'Amour A L'Amour", "Lorsque J'Etais
Phoque", and "La Barque De L'Oncle Leon". DVD includes the film
Les Rivieres Souterraines -- which features memories and images
from Barouh's past -- including old interviews with Barouh, Francis
Lai, and Claude Lelouch -- and some classic performances
too! (Please note that
DVD is PAL coded.)
